Why Aren’t You Branding?


We’ve being working with small businesses for quite a years. In that time, we’ve found  there are typically three reasons most business are not branding. They are very common and every business is challenged by them: It’s too expensive, It requires too much additional time or the common question -- WTF is a brand, and why the hell do I need one?!?


Money is ALWAYS an issue for a small business. You never enough and what little you have, never seems to go very far. Sure, It’s good business to be frugal, but should it have to be a necessity for survival? Having some savings gives you some level of peace of mind. Conversely, you also know that every business must grow if it's going to survive, and growth costs money. Those are competing ideas. So, how do you grow your business and not spend any extra cash? A strong brand. Brands costs very little to maintain, but they vital to the success of every small business. Brands are the oxygen you're business needs to live.


Time is a commodity that is always in very short supply, even more so if you’re a business owner. Eight hour days, vacations, summer Fridays? What are those? There's plenty “on you're desk" to do every day. That’s before you can even think about sales or marketing, let alone vacations and days off. Networking? You’ve got even less time for networking. We get it, it’s a conflict that seems difficult to resolve, but it’s easier than you think, with a vibrant brand!


Brands are power, they mean business. They actually give you something TO market! You will have a greater success rate on any marketing endevour. Whether, it’s selling to a new consumer, a postcard mailing, social media post or a thirty second commercial at a networking event, brand connect and get you more business. It’s how consumers know and recognize you. With a solid brand, most of the work is done, leaving you to do what you do best!  But the question remains….WTF is a brand and why do you need on?


WTF is a Brand?

A brand, In its most basic and simple of terms, is your business' personality! It's how consumers decide if they want to purchase from you, continue to purchase from you and tell others to purchase from you. If you're popular and consumers like you, they are connecting with your brand. However, unlike some humans, if your brand isn't connecting, if you're not popular, you can be!

They may be exactly the same, but chances are there’s a disconnect.  At its core, that is what branding and marketing should do: connect you with the right people, in the right way at the right time. It’s not about followers or likes, it’s about engaging consumer to purchase, generating you more revenue to grow. Followers and likes do not grow your business. They never have and they never will….


If you are a dry cleaner in a mid sized town, like Anaheim, you've got challenges. There are at least 5-6 dry cleaners with a 3-4 mile radius. Other than, "you didn't screw up my shirts, so I guess I'll keep using you" what’s the real differences between you all? Is that the kind of customer loyalty you're looking for, ya didn’t screw it up, so I’ll hang around. The first time there's a negative experience, or challenge to the brand, that consumer is taps out!


I frequent a dry cleaner on the opposite side of town.  At times, it can be out of my way. So why do I continue to patronize them? It's a family owned business. Everyone in the family works there. They emigrated here and have built a life, they excel at tailoring because they were designers in their country. I like them, I feel part of the family. The high quality of the work and the experience of walking through the door and feeling special! Were there every to be a problem, I know they’d make it right.


Recently, there was serious construction on the street in front of the strip mall they’re located in. It was scheduled to last for about two weeks, not a lot of time. On a visit them before construction started, they expressed concern with losing business, due to the construction. They feared become an inconvenience and some of the business may not return. It was a valid fear, not  irrational at all. It happens way too often.


I pointed out that a vibrant brand, like the one they had, ensured that the loyal people will stick with you. A brand makes consumers part of the family. They make consumers want to be around you.


That’s what a brand does for you. It’s like having a constantly energized best friend.  When you and your consumers are on the same page, sales is a cinch. It’s like talking to your closest friends. It did take us awhile, though, but eventually we deciphered that to mean: "...what benefits does my business get from doing business with the Design Office? What's the ROI?" It's what everyone wants to know. It's why you're here reading this. Right? Inquiring minds...

Of course we have the standard, and ubiquitous reasons...Thirty yrs of hands on, industry experience, affordable, flat rate pricing, long history of happy clients, well versed in DC silver age comic lore...the list goes on and on. We've got all that but that's not what makes us us.


What you get from working with us is how we see the world. Like true creatives, through brand colored glasses (seriously, we do...they're on now, check instagram). Brands infuse everything we do.


Our core belief is that brands are stories, stories about your business boiled down to an easily recalled idea and image. Marketing is then telling those stories in unique ways to people you don't know yet. Successful brands tell genuine stories that are easily and consistently repeatable while resonating with consumers. Using that definition, can anyone and anything can be a brand? Yes, they can and they should think of themselves as one.


Every client we work with sees themselves as a brand. Where we come in is to work with them to see the possibilities inherent in their own brand. Sometimes for the first time, sometimes like seeing an old friend again for the first time in a long time. We show them how their brands give their marketing faster recognition with consumers.
